What this is (and isn't): there is no single official CGPA-to-GPA formula. Every US university converts your transcript its own way internally, and third-party evaluators like WES do a course-by-course conversion using your full transcript, not just a final CGPA number. The two US figures above are estimates using two different, commonly cited public methods — use them to get a feel for where you stand, not as a number to submit anywhere.

How each number is calculated

Simple linear method

GPA = (CGPA ÷ 10) × 4. Treats the 10-point scale as directly proportional to the 4.0 scale. This is the most widely used shortcut on forms and resumes, but it is not any university's official policy — it's a convention, not a standard.

WES-style band method

World Education Services (WES) performs official evaluations course-by-course: each course grade and its credit hours are converted individually to a US equivalent, then credit-weighted and summed to a cumulative GPA — it is nota single multiplier applied to your final CGPA. What we show here estimates that outcome using WES's published India letter-grade bands (e.g., 9-10 CGPA → 4.0, 8-8.99 → 3.7, 7-7.99 → 3.3, 6-6.99 → 3.0), applied to your overall CGPA as a stand-in for a real transcript. An actual WES evaluation can differ, especially if your grades are uneven across semesters. Source: WES graduate admissions evaluation guidance.

German grade — Modified Bavarian Formula

Note = 1 + 3 × (Nmax − Nd) / (Nmax − Nmin), where Nmax is the best possible score (10 on the CGPA scale), Nmin is the minimum passing score at your institution (default 4.0), and Nd is your score. This is the actual formula German universities and uni-assist use to convert a foreign grade onto the German 1.0 (best)–5.0 (fail) scale, not an approximation — but the Nmin you enter changes the result, so use your institution's real passing threshold if you know it.

Questions students actually ask

Is 8.5 CGPA good for an MS application?

On the simple linear method, 8.5/10 ≈ 3.4/4.0 — competitive for most mid-to-upper-tier US CS/engineering programs, though top-10 programs typically see admits closer to 3.7+. But admissions committees weigh your CGPA alongside your college's reputation, your major GPA, and your SOP/LORs — a 3.4 with strong research beats a 3.9 with nothing else most cycles.

Does WES round up my GPA?

No. WES evaluates course-by-course: each course's grade and credit hours are converted individually to a US equivalent, then credit-weighted and averaged — it does not take your final CGPA and apply a single multiplier. Because our calculator here only has your overall CGPA (not a transcript), the WES-style figure is a band estimate based on WES's published India grade-conversion table, not what WES would issue on an official evaluation.

Do universities accept a self-converted GPA?

Most US universities accept your CGPA/percentage as reported on your transcript for the application itself and do their own internal conversion — you generally don't need a WES evaluation just to apply. Some universities and most Canadian ones do require a third-party credential evaluation (WES, ECE, or similar) at the time of application or after admission. Always check the specific program's requirements page; this tool is for your own planning, not a document to submit.

Which method should I put on my resume or SOP?

Report your actual CGPA or percentage as given by your university — don't self-convert on official documents. If a form specifically asks for a 4.0-scale GPA, the simple linear method ((CGPA/10)×4) is the most widely used convention and least likely to look like you inflated it.

Why do the two US GPA numbers differ?

The linear method treats the CGPA scale as continuous and proportional. The WES-style method uses discrete letter-grade bands (e.g., 9-10 CGPA = 4.0, 8-8.99 = 3.7), so it can produce a different number even for a small CGPA change near a band edge. Neither is official — see the note above the calculator.
