A sample SOP review, in full

Before you paste your own draft, here is exactly what comes back. A 385-word SOP of the kind that gets written every October, scored against the published rubric, with every weak line quoted.

This SOP is constructed, not a real student's. It is assembled from the patterns that recur in first drafts. We are not going to publish and critique a document some student wrote and posted asking for help - that would be the exact behaviour this site exists to argue against.

The draft

Ever since my childhood, I have been fascinated by computers and the way technology can change the world. My father, an electrical engineer, would often bring home circuit boards, and watching him work sparked a passion in me that has only grown stronger with time. This lifelong passion is what drives me to pursue a Master of Science in Computer Science at your esteemed university.

During my undergraduate studies in Computer Science at a reputed engineering college in India, I consistently performed well academically and developed a strong foundation in core subjects such as Data Structures, Algorithms, Operating Systems and Database Management Systems. I was always among the top performers in my class and received appreciation from my professors for my dedication and hard work.

In my third year, I worked on a major project where I built a machine learning model for predicting customer churn. I used Python and various cutting-edge libraries to clean the dataset and train the model, which gave very good accuracy. This project taught me a lot about the practical applications of artificial intelligence and made me realise the immense potential of this innovative field. I also completed an internship at a leading software company, where I gained valuable industry exposure and worked on real-world problems using React and Node.js.

Apart from academics, I have always been an active participant in extracurricular activities. I was the coordinator of our college technical festival, where I managed a large team and ensured the smooth execution of multiple events. This experience honed my leadership and organisational skills tremendously.

I am particularly drawn to your university because of its world-class faculty, state-of-the-art infrastructure and excellent global reputation. The rigorous curriculum and research-oriented environment will provide me with the perfect platform to enhance my knowledge and skills. I am confident that studying among such brilliant minds will help me grow both professionally and personally.

After completing my Master's degree, I intend to settle in the United States and build a long and successful career there. In the long run, I want to contribute to society and make a meaningful difference in the world through technology. I am certain that your prestigious institution is the ideal place for me to begin this journey, and I look forward to the opportunity to be a part of it.

385 words. Nothing about it is unusual - that is the point of using it.

The score

31/ 100

Fluent, sincere, and almost entirely unfalsifiable - there is not one sentence here that another applicant could not have written about themselves.

Technical Density

14/30

Python, React and Node.js are named, and the core CS subjects are listed. But nothing is described at a level only this writer could have written - no architecture, no trade-off, no problem that resisted a first attempt. "Cutting-edge libraries" is doing work that a library name should do.

Metric-Driven Outcomes

8/30

Every achievement here is asserted rather than measured. "Very good accuracy", "a large team", "among the top performers" - all four paragraphs of experience contain no number a reader could check or compare.

Faculty / Program Alignment

3/20

No professor, lab, paper or course is named anywhere. Replace the university's name with any other university and not one sentence would need editing - which means the committee reading it learns nothing about why them.

Career ROI Logic

6/20

"Contribute to society" is not a plan, and the only concrete statement of intent - settling permanently in the US - is the one sentence that actively harms the application.

7 flagged lines, most damaging first

Every flag quotes the line, says why it fails, and gives a fix direction. On your own SOP you see the first three without an email, and all of them once your email is verified.

I intend to settle in the United States and build a long and successful career there.

A US student visa requires you to show non-immigrant intent. This sentence states the opposite in plain language. It is the single most damaging line in the document.

Fix: State a role and a sector, not a country: what you want to be doing three years after graduating, and why this degree is required to do it.

Ever since my childhood, I have been fascinated by computers and the way technology can change the world.

A reader working through several hundred of these has seen this opening in a large share of them. It uses your most valuable sentence to say nothing that distinguishes you.

Fix: Open with the most technically specific thing you have ever done. The reader should hit evidence in the first line, not biography.

unquantified_claimshown without email
I built a machine learning model for predicting customer churn ... which gave very good accuracy.

This is the strongest thing in the document and it is unmeasured. "Very good accuracy" tells a reader you either did not evaluate it properly or are hiding the number.

Fix: Give the metric and the baseline: what accuracy or AUC, against what naive benchmark, on how many rows.

flattery_over_fit
I am particularly drawn to your university because of its world-class faculty, state-of-the-art infrastructure and excellent global reputation.

This paragraph would be true of two hundred universities. Praise costs the writer nothing, so it carries no information about fit.

Fix: Name two professors and what specifically in their recent work connects to something you have already built or read.

buzzword_salad
I used Python and various cutting-edge libraries ... the immense potential of this innovative field.

"Cutting-edge" and "innovative" are adjectives standing where a technical noun should be. Naming the library would have been shorter and far more convincing.

Fix: Delete both adjectives and name the tools: scikit-learn, XGBoost, whatever you actually used, and why that one.

unquantified_claim
I was the coordinator of our college technical festival, where I managed a large team.

"A large team" could be four people or forty. Leadership claims without a headcount and a budget read as inflation.

Fix: Give the number of people, the budget you controlled, and the attendance figure.

missing_career_bridge
In the long run, I want to contribute to society and make a meaningful difference in the world through technology.

There is no bridge here between this specific degree and any specific outcome. It is the closing sentence, so it is what the reader is left holding.

Fix: Replace with one concrete three-year goal and the two courses in this programme that get you there.

What this review cannot tell you

Whether you get in. A 31 does not mean rejection and a 90 does not mean admission - the score exists to make weak spots impossible to ignore, nothing more. It cannot judge whether your research interests genuinely match the lab, it cannot read your recommenders, and it has no idea how strong this year's applicant pool is. Anyone selling you a number that predicts your admit is selling you something.

Now run yours through it.

Paste text or upload a PDF. The score and the first three flags need no email at all, and your SOP is never stored - only a one-way hash of it.
