Honest answer
Will I get 2 years or 18 months on the UK Graduate Route?
Numbers last checked: 2026-09-03
Short answer
If you are still choosing where to apply for a 2027 start, you will get 18 months. The cut-off everyone is quoting - apply on or before 31 December 2026 and keep two years - refers to the date you apply for the Graduate Route itself, which you can only do after you finish your degree. A student starting a one-year UK master's in September 2027 applies for the Graduate Route in late 2028, well past the cut-off. The two-year window is only reachable by people already in the UK who finish and apply before the end of 2026.
Why this trips people up
Almost every article about this change leads with the 31 December 2026 deadline, which reads like advice you can act on. For anyone who has not started their course yet, it is not. The Graduate Route is applied for from inside the UK after your university confirms you have completed the course - it is not something you apply for alongside your student visa, and not something your intake date secures.
So the useful question is not how to beat the deadline. It is whether 18 months is enough time to find a job that will sponsor you, because that is the number you will actually get.
What 18 months actually has to cover
Finding a role, clearing probation, and persuading an employer to take on sponsorship costs and paperwork. Employers know the clock as well as you do, and a shorter runway makes some of them more hesitant, not less - which is the second-order effect that does not show up in the headline.
On our own figures the UK case was already tight on time: our verified UK programmes run around ₹78.4 lakh, and recovering that takes about 6.2 years of extra savings after tax and living costs, against an 18-month window. The sticker price is not the problem. The runway is, because the payback only completes if a sponsored job follows.
