Honest answer

What GPA do you need for an MS in the USA as an Indian student?

Numbers last checked: 2026-08-02

Short answer

Across the 6 US programmes in our verified set the published or effective bar runs from 3.0 to 3.6 on a 4.0 scale. A 3.0/4.0 is the most common stated minimum (Arizona State University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, San Jose State University), Univ. of Illinois Urbana-Champaign sits around 3.2, and Carnegie Mellon University is effectively around 3.6. Important caveat: a published minimum is a filter, not a competitive bar — admits at selective programmes typically sit well above it.

Minimum versus competitive

These two numbers get conflated constantly, usually to a student's disadvantage. A stated 3.0 minimum means applications below it are screened out; it does not mean a 3.0 is competitive. Where a university publishes no minimum at all — Carnegie Mellon University is the case in our set — the figure we record is our estimate of a realistic competitive threshold, and we label it as an estimate rather than presenting it as an official cutoff.

Rank does not predict the bar, either. University of Manchester publishes an India-specific bar around 2.6/4.0 despite ranking well below University College London, which asks around 3.0. Build a shortlist from published requirements, not from a rankings table.

If your GPA is below the bar

It is a filter you have to clear, not a verdict on you — but the honest version is that no essay rewrites a transcript. What can move the decision at the margin is demonstrated technical work, relevant experience, and a strong quantitative test score where the programme still accepts one.

Be wary of anyone promising admission to a specific university regardless of your GPA. Nobody outside an admissions committee can promise that, and the promise is usually attached to a fee.
