Honest answer
MS in UK vs USA — which has better ROI for Indian students in 2026?
Numbers last checked: 2026-08-02
Short answer
The UK is cheaper and a year shorter; the USA pays far more. In our verified set, UK programmes run ₹65.3 lakh–₹78.4 lakh for 12 months against ₹59.3 lakh–₹1.02 crore for 16–24 months in the US — but typical US starting pay (₹1.10 crore–₹1.32 crore/yr) is roughly double the UK's (₹40.7 lakh–₹48.3 lakh/yr). On our payback formula that works out to about 2.0 years for the UK versus 1.0 years for the US. The UK's real risk is not cost — it is that the Graduate Route shortens to 18 months for visas granted from January 2027.
Cost versus earnings, honestly
The UK's appeal is front-loaded: one year instead of two means one year of tuition, one year of living costs, and one fewer year out of the workforce. University of Manchester's MSc Advanced Computer Science at about ₹65.3 lakh is genuinely one of the lower-cost routes to a well-regarded degree in our set.
The catch shows up on the earnings side. UK tech salaries trail US ones by a wide margin — ₹48.3 lakh/yr at the UCL end against ₹1.32 crore/yr for Georgia Institute of Technology, which publishes its own career-survey median. Because our payback formula divides cost by the gain over an ₹8.0 lakh/yr India baseline, a smaller salary gain stretches payback even when the sticker price is lower.
Put plainly: the UK wins if you compare invoices, the US wins if you compare paychecks, and which matters more depends entirely on whether you actually stay and work abroad afterwards.
The visa question decides it
The UK Graduate Route currently gives 2 years of post-study work, shortening to 18 months for visas granted from January 2027 — so your intake year directly changes your runway, and a January-2027 start is a materially different proposition from a September-2026 one. Check which side of that line your intake falls on before you compare anything else.
The US side has its own gate: STEM OPT still gives up to 3 years of work authorisation, but converting to H-1B afterwards now means a wage-weighted lottery with roughly 15% odds for entry-level offers plus a $100,000 supplemental employer fee. Neither country is a safe default — they fail in different ways, and you should pick the failure you can absorb.
