Short answer
On payback alone the two are closer than the old headline numbers suggested. Germany's RWTH Aachen (about ₹32.7 lakh total, near-zero tuition) takes roughly 1.8 years of extra savings to recover its cost, faster than 3 of the 6 US programs in our verified set but not as fast as 0.9 years for Georgia Tech, the best-value verified US program. The US wins on absolute salary (₹1.32 crore/yr median at Georgia Tech vs ~₹54.4 lakh/yr market band in Germany) but carries the 2026 H-1B structural risk after OPT. Germany's 18-month job-search visa and Blue Card pathway is slower money, higher certainty; the US is higher ceiling, more lottery.
The honest comparison
Cost: RWTH's MSc Data Science is about ₹32.7 lakh all-in (living costs, near-zero tuition). Georgia Tech's MS CS - the best cost-to-outcome ratio in our US set - is about ₹59.3 lakh. TUM now charges non-EU tuition (~₹61.0 lakh total), so don't build a "Germany is free" plan around TUM specifically.
Salary and ceiling: Georgia Tech's published median is $138,500 - that's the university's own survey, not our estimate. German starting salaries for the same profiles run materially lower as a market band. Over a career, top-of-market US compensation has no German equivalent - IF you clear the post-OPT immigration hurdle, which since 2026 is genuinely harder for entry-level hires.
Certainty: Germany's 18-month post-study visa and the Blue Card route don't run through a lottery. If your family's goal is a reliable path to working and settling abroad, the German math is easier to underwrite. If maximizing expected earnings and you can tolerate immigration risk, the US case is still strong - especially at in-state-priced programs.
One requirement quirk both ways: RWTH mandates the GRE (Quant 75th+ percentile) - unusual for Germany - while many US programs have gone GRE-optional.
