Honest answer
Is an MS in Data Science still worth it in 2026?
Numbers last checked: 2026-08-02
Short answer
On our verified data the label matters less than the programme. Across the 6 data-science-titled programmes we track, total cost runs ₹32.7 lakh–₹1.21 crore and payback ranges from 0.7 to 2.4 years — a spread wider than the gap between "data science" and "computer science" as categories. Judge the specific programme's cost, curriculum and market, not the title on the certificate.
The spread within the label
RWTH Aachen University's MSc Data Science totals about ₹32.7 lakh; UNSW Sydney's Master of Data Science and Decisions totals about ₹1.21 crore. Both are data-science master's degrees at reputable universities. The cost difference is ₹88.6 lakh. Any answer to "is data science worth it" that does not distinguish between those two is not answering your question.
New Jersey Institute of Technology is one of only two programmes in our set that publishes its own graduate salary figure rather than us relying on a market band — worth noting simply because published outcome data is rare enough that its presence is a genuine differentiator when you are comparing.
What we can't tell you
We have no verified data on how demand for data-science roles specifically is moving in 2026, and we are not going to speculate about AI's effect on entry-level hiring — that is exactly the kind of confident-sounding claim this project exists to argue against. Our salary bands are role-and-country market bands checked in July 2026, not forecasts.
What we would check in your position: whether the curriculum is genuinely quantitative or a rebranded analytics course, whether the department has an industry placement record it will show you, and whether the total cost survives contact with the payback maths if salaries in the field come in below the current band.
