Is an MS in Australia still worth it after the 2026 visa changes?

Short answer
It is the hardest case to make in our verified set. Australia holds the two most expensive programmes we track (₹1.11 crore–₹1.21 crore) with typical starting salaries around ₹54.2 lakh–₹58.2 lakh/yr — payback of roughly 2.4 years, the longest of the five countries. On top of that, the 2026 Subclass 485 changes cut the age cap to 35, raised the English bar to IELTS 6.5 and increased fees. It can still work if you have a specific reason to be there; it is a poor default.
What actually changed
The Subclass 485 post-study work visa tightened in 2026 on three fronts at once: the age cap dropped to 35, the English requirement rose to IELTS 6.5, and application fees went up sharply. The old shorthand of 'two easy years after graduating' no longer describes the policy.
The age cap in particular catches a group that older advice never had to warn: working professionals doing an MS in their mid-thirties, who are precisely the cohort most often sold on Australia as a settlement route.
The number that should worry you more than the visa
Our own data carries a caveat that cuts against Australia. The Australian salary bands here are role-and-country market bands, and the QILT Graduate Outcomes 2024 International Report put the sector-wide international postgraduate-coursework median at A$70,000 — which suggests our figures may be optimistic. We could not retrieve the per-university breakdown, so we cannot correct them precisely, and we would rather flag that than quietly present a band we half-doubt.
If those bands are high, then ₹1.21 crore of cost against a lower real salary makes the payback worse than the 2.4 years shown here. Ask any programme you are considering for its own published graduate-outcome data. If it does not have any, treat the recruitment brochure's salary claims as marketing.
