Honest answer

Is an MS abroad worth it if you plan to return to India?

Numbers last checked: 2026-08-02

Short answer

It is a much weaker financial case, and the arithmetic is not subtle. Our payback formula depends on the gap between a foreign starting salary and an ₹8.0 lakh/year India baseline. Remove the foreign salary and the entire numerator disappears — you keep costs of ₹32.7 lakh–₹1.21 crore and earn in rupees. Rupee depreciation also stops being a hedge and becomes pure cost. If you are returning by choice, pick the cheapest credible programme, not the most prestigious one.

Why the standard numbers stop applying

Every payback figure on this site — from 0.5 years to 2.4 years — assumes you earn the destination-market salary. That assumption is doing all the work. An Indian return salary post-MS may well exceed the ₹8.0 lakh baseline, but not by the multiple a US or Canadian starting package would.

The currency effect flips too. If you earn abroad and repay a rupee loan, a weakening rupee helps you. If you pay foreign fees and then earn in rupees, it is one-way cost with no offset — the one scenario where the depreciation scare stories are actually correct.

What still makes it worth it

Non-financial reasons are real and we are not going to pretend otherwise: a specific research group, a specialisation India does not teach well, a credential that genuinely opens doors in your field, or simply wanting the experience. Those are legitimate. They are just not ROI, and they should not be sold to you as ROI.

If the plan is to return, the programme choice should follow: RWTH Aachen University at about ₹32.7 lakh and UNSW Sydney at about ₹1.21 crore deliver a broadly comparable credential to an Indian employer for a difference of ₹88.6 lakh. Borrowing the larger figure for a rupee salary is the single most expensive avoidable mistake in this decision.
