Honest answer

Is a ₹1 crore education loan for an MS in the USA worth it?

Numbers last checked: 2026-08-02

Short answer

At a typical 10.5% over 10 years, ₹1 crore costs about ₹1,34,900/month and roughly ₹1.62 crore in total — about ₹61.9 lakh of interest on top of what you borrowed, before moratorium interest is even counted. Whether that is worth it turns almost entirely on whether you work in the US afterwards: top US programmes in our set pay ₹1.10 crore–₹1.32 crore/yr, which services that EMI comfortably, while an Indian return salary would not.

The arithmetic, disclosed

Illustration only, at 10.5% per annum over 10 years — a typical Indian education-loan range is roughly 9.5–11.5%, and yours will differ. Monthly EMI on ₹1 crore: about ₹1,34,900. Total repaid: about ₹1.62 crore. That figure also excludes interest accruing during your moratorium, which most Indian lenders capitalise into the principal rather than waive — so the real EMI is usually higher than a basic calculator suggests.

Ask whether you need ₹1 crore at all

Only 3 of the 14 verified programmes we track cost ₹1 crore or more. Georgia Institute of Technology — which charges international students in-state rates and publishes the strongest salary outcome in our set — comes to about ₹59.3 lakh. The size of the loan is a choice about which programme you pick, not a fixed cost of studying in America.

Before borrowing at this scale, check whether your university is on a lender's published collateral-free list, because a secured loan against family property and an unsecured one are very different risks to take with the same degree.
