Honest answer
Does the new 4-year F-1 limit stop me doing OPT after my MS?
Numbers last checked: 2026-09-03
Short answer
Not by itself, but the arithmetic is tighter than most people realise. A two-year master's plus three years of STEM OPT is five years, against a four-year admission period. The rule does not forbid that - it means you must file Form I-539 with USCIS to extend rather than simply continuing, and pay for it. Plan the extension into your first year rather than discovering it in your third.
The change, precisely
DHS published a final rule on 17 July 2026 replacing open-ended 'duration of status' for F-1 students with a fixed admission period, generally capped at four years, effective 15 September 2026. The grace period after your programme ends drops from 60 days to 30.
For a one-year master's followed by STEM OPT the maths fits comfortably. For a two-year master's followed by the full three-year STEM OPT it does not, and the gap is closed by an extension application rather than automatically.
What this means for choosing a programme
Programme length has become a visa variable, not just a cost and time variable. A 24-month programme and an 18-month programme that looked equivalent now differ in how much of your work authorisation sits inside the initial admission period.
This is worth weighing alongside cost rather than after it. Our full write-up of the rule, including the filing dates and what it does not change, is in the guide below.
