Honest answer
Can I do an MS abroad without an education loan?
Numbers last checked: 2026-08-02
Short answer
It depends almost entirely on which country you pick. The cheapest programme in our verified set — RWTH Aachen University's MSc Data Science — totals about ₹32.7 lakh for 24 months, because non-EU tuition is near zero and the cost is mostly living expenses. That is within reach of family savings for some households. The most expensive, UNSW Sydney at about ₹1.21 crore, is roughly 3.7× that — a different financial decision entirely.
The routes that genuinely reduce the number
Low-tuition public universities are the largest single lever. Germany's public system still charges non-EU students little or nothing at some institutions — RWTH Aachen University is the example in our set — so the bill collapses to living costs. Note the trade-off: both German programmes we track require the GRE, and RWTH Aachen University asks for Quant at the 75th percentile or above.
Funded or assistantship-supported programmes are the other route, but be careful about how they are sold to you. A tuition waiver is not the same as a stipend, and a stipend that covers rent is not the same as one that covers the whole 24-month programme. Ask for the number in writing and ask what happens if the funding is not renewed in year two.
Shorter programmes cut cost mechanically. A 12-month UK MSc is one year of living costs instead of two — which is why it can beat a cheaper-per-year two-year programme on total spend.
What to be sceptical of
Treat 'scholarship guaranteed' claims as marketing until you see the award letter. Partial fee waivers are common and routinely presented as scholarships; they change the total by far less than the framing implies.
If you do borrow, size it against the programme rather than the country. The spread across our verified set is about ₹89 lakh — bigger than most families' entire education budget, and entirely within your control at the shortlisting stage.
